Kevin Swaim enters his 11th season as the head coach of the Gonzaga cross country team. In his previous ten years as head coach of the Zags, Swaim has won WCC Coach of the Year honors on four occasions, twice with the women's team and twice with the men, including the 2003 WCC Men's Coach of the Year. In 1995 under Swaim's guidance, Gonzaga won the WCC Women's Cross Country title and in 1996 Cheska Fairbanks won the individual WCC women's crown on her way to NCAA All-America honors, finishing 14th in the NCAA Championships. Swaim has also had the honor of coaching 19 All-WCC runners during his tenure. An avid runner, Swaim has competed at every distance from the 800m to the marathon. A 4-year letterwinner in track and cross country at Point Loma College from 1982-86, Swaim competed in the NAIA National Cross Country Championships in 1985. He graduated from Point Loma College in 1986 with a bachelor of arts and later earned a masters degree in recreation from Cal-State Long Beach. More recently Swaim completed his bachelor of education degree at Eastern Washington University and currently works as a full-time spanish teacher at Mead High School in Spokane. Swaim and his wife Paige have two sons Spence (7/13/99) and Wyatt (4/2/02). |
